Q: What is a Good Faith Estimate?

A: Effective January 1st, 2022, the “No Surprises Act” mandates that medical and mental healthcare providers give patients a “Good Faith Estimate” (GFE) to estimate the cost of medical and mental health services. Uninsured individuals and those who do not intend to use their insurance benefits for treatment, are entitled to receive a Good Faith Estimate.

The GFE provides an estimated cost of services for individuals seeking treatment. This bill intends to provide transparency for the costs of healthcare. It is based on information known at the time the estimate is provided and does not include any unexpected costs that may arise during treatment.

You as a patient reserve the right to:

  • Request a “Good Faith Estimate” prior to scheduling a medical or therapy service.

  • Receive a “Good Faith Estimate” from your healthcare provider to estimate the cost of medical or mental healthcare.

  • Dispute a bill that substantially exceeds the estimated charges (at least $400 more than expected)

Your total cost of services depends on the number of sessions attended and the type of services provided. The GFE is not a contract and does not determine the number of sessions any one individual will need for treatment.

The fee for a 53-to-59-minute psychotherapy session is $150 (CPT Code 90837) for both in-person and telehealth appointments. You may predict the future costs by multiplying the session fee of $150 by the total number of sessions. This will be the total estimated cost for mental health services.

For example, $150 session fee x 5 sessions = $750.

Your estimated charges will increase according to number of visits and length of treatment.

How often you will engage in receiving therapy services is influenced by the following:

  • Specific client treatment needs

  • Therapist availability

  • Scheduling needs

  • Personal finances

You and the therapist will assess frequency of therapy and determine when you have met your therapy goals and are ready for discharge. Should the frequency of sessions change, or if you would like a new GFE, you can request a new GFE at any time during therapy.

The below services are billed at a pro-rated amount of 15-minute increments based on $150 fee per hour (for example, 15 minutes = $37.50).

  • Administrative tasks

  • Support Outside of Sessions

  • Professional Collaboration

  • Letter Writing
